Special Education at Baker Web Academy (BWA)

Baker Web Academy (BWA) provides individualized special education services in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Services are designed to meet each student’s unique needs while aligning with the virtual charter school model of Baker Charter Schools (BCS).

BCS is a school of choice, and our educational model is a strong fit for many — but not all — students. Families are encouraged to carefully consider how the virtual environment aligns with their student’s learning style, support needs, and educational goals. The student’s IEP team will make the final determination on the placement, considering if the student’s needs can be met within a BWA placement

Key Features of Special Education at BWA
  • The special education case manager and advisory teacher collaborate closely with general educators, adapting the curriculum to meet diverse needs, fostering an inclusive environment, and supporting both academic and functional growth for all students.
  • Access to an advisory teacher and grading teachers throughout the school week
  • Virtual tutoring services available 24/7
  • Virtual delivery of services, allowing flexibility and individualized scheduling
Important Considerations for Choosing BWA

As a fully virtual school, BWA’s model includes some considerations families should be aware of:

  • Limited in-person social interaction with peers and adults due to the virtual environment
    • Regional teams plan optional field trips and events to support social engagement
    • Some instruction and services are delivered in small-group Zoom settings
  • Parents/guardians serve as the primary day-to-day learning support, including:
    • Encouragement and motivation
    • Communication support with teachers
    • Assistance with technology and organization
    • Support with understanding and completing coursework
  • Limited direct contact with licensed educators
    • Advisory teachers meet with students approximately twice per month to provide specialized instruction and monitor progress toward IEP goals
  • Speech, language, communication, and behavior services are provided virtually by licensed specialists
  • Occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and other related services are typically delivered through a consultation model, as educational needs change within the virtual setting
Commitment to Individualized Decision-Making

IEP teams carefully consider how students can progress towards functional and academic goals at BWA. Decisions are made collaboratively and reviewed regularly to ensure the student continues to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE) appropriate to their needs.

Families are encouraged to reach out with questions to determine whether Baker Web Academy is the right educational fit for their student.

Section 504 Services at Baker Web Academy (BWA)

Baker Web Academy (BWA) provides 504 Plans in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. A 504 Plan is designed to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to education by removing barriers to participation in the general education environment.
BCS is a school of choice, and the virtual instructional model is a strong fit for many students. Families are encouraged to consider how the virtual environment supports their student’s specific access needs.

Key Features of 504 Services at BWA
  • Full access to the general education curriculum
  • Accommodations provided to support access, as outlined in the student’s 504 Plan
  • Collaboration between families, teachers, and school staff to support student access and participation
Important Considerations for 504 Placement at BWA

Families should be aware of the following considerations related to BWA’s virtual model:

  • 504 Plans provide accommodations only and do not include specialized instruction or IEP goals
  • Instruction is delivered in the general education setting.
  • Limited in-person interaction with peers and educators due to the virtual environment
  • Parents/guardians play a key role in day-to-day support, including:
    • Encouraging engagement and attendance
    • Supporting communication with teachers
    • Assisting with organization and time management
    • Supporting technology use
  • Accommodations are implemented within the virtual platform, which may not address all access needs for every student
Commitment to Access and Ongoing Review

504 eligibility and accommodation plans are reviewed periodically to ensure that accommodations continue to provide meaningful access to the educational program.
